Introduction to the Readings - Proper 34 - Reigh of Christ

Jer 23:1-6 – Canticle 19 – Col 1:11-20 – Lk 23:33-43
Intro to the Readings
This is Christ the King Sunday. The reading from the Prophet Jeremiah is a word of warning to those who lead the people. It is also prophetic – God will “raise up for David a righteous Branch.”
The canticle is the Benedictus, familiar to many, the song of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist.
From Colossians listen and be reminded of the cost of being brought into the Kingdom of God’s beloved Son.
As we approach Christmas we are not prepared for the Gospel reading for today. It is from the Crucifixion.

Let the petition of the thief upon a cross be your petition.
Above all the noise of the world hear the Saviour say: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
