Introduction to the Readings - Proper 20 / August 12 -20

Isa 5:1-7 – Psa 80:1-2, 8-18 – Heb 11:29-12:2 – Lk 12:49-56
Intro to the Readings
The reading from Isaiah is really a love song. A love song with a cry for justice. God says “judge between me and my vineyard.”
The Psalm 80 picks up the imagery of the vine and grapes on the vine. With this Psalm as a community we cry out to Yahweh to preserve and save us.
The reading from Hebrews continues from last Sunday. We hear again of individuals who lived by faith but did not receive the promise, they and others form that great cloud of witnesses.
From the Gospel we usually hear of mercy and peace. Today’s Gospel speaks of fire – baptism – division – and interpreting the signs.

Let us listen to God’s Word.
Let us hear the cry of God
And let us cry out to the Lord God to save and restore us.
