Introduction to the Readings - Proper 17 / July 24 - 30

Hos 1:2-10 – Psalm 85 – Col 2:6-15 (16-19) – Lk 11:1-13
Intro to the Readings

The first reading is from Hosea the prophet. Through the wife of Hosea, and the names of their children God’s proclaims judgement, and yet mercy is heard – in the “yet”.
Psalm 85 is the cry of the community. Verses six and seven of the Psalm are very familiar.
From Colossians the Apostle Paul focuses on Christ Jesus the Lord – that in him the fullness of God dwells and that we come to fullness ourselves in Christ.
In the Gospel the disciples ask the “Lord, teach us to pray.”

Let us listen to the names and Hosea’s children and hear the judgement and mercy of God.
As a community let us to cry to the Lord God for mercy and forgiveness.
As those who have received forgiveness let us grow in the fulness that is our in Christ.
As disciples of the Lord Jesus let learn how to pray.
